1950 American Nut & Chocolate Counter Display Box w/16 Unit Retail Boxes
To our knowledge, this counter display box may be the only of its specie in our industry. Appearing in 1950 were a series of metallic pins and mini pennants (both depicting major league team logos) sponsored by the American Nut & Chocolate Co. These colorful novelties were packaged (one of each) with candy and retailed as a boxed composite for a nickel apiece. (Our immediately following two catalog listings offer collections of the pins and the pennants respectively.) Here, unveiled for the reader's consideration is that display box, to include 16 of the 5-cent retail boxes. Specifically,
trong>1) Counter Display Box for American Nut & Chocolate pins and pennants - This box is in pretty rough condition. Measuring 8-1/2" square x 3-1/2", it originally held 32 retail unit boxes that measured about 4" x 2-1/4" x 7/8". The lid of the display box is completely detached (but yet included here). The box is quite soiled and creased and, internally, there appears heavy product residue. Much to its credit, on the other hand, it identifies the product as "Double Play" (possibly an infringement on the 1941 baseball card issue produced by cross-town confectioner, Gum Products). Further, the printed announcements appearing on the panels of this box assure that "in every package ... a Big League pennant and button." Elsewhere, we note that there's "candy in every package", and that the entire production was devised by the "American Nut & Chocolate Co."
trong>2) There are included 16 of the retail boxes (which, like the master box, may be the only of their kind in the hobby). Most of these have at least one piece of cello-rolled candy (howsoever now prohibitively desiccated), but no durable novelties. These boxes are in remarkable condition - minimally EX, but most are Near Mint. They're smartly illustrated on every panel and they were printed in two styles - with cardboard team logo discs perforated into a panel, or the same in unperforated form.
The discovery of this counter display box and its attendant retail packages provides answers to a few previously unknown details previously enshrouding this scarce issue from 1950.
