Late 1960s N.Y. Giants Game-Worn Sideline Cape
NFL 1960s sideline capes were colorful - but for the most part, generic and player-unidentifiable. The Packers, Colts, 49ers, Lions and Browns all showcased attractive creations, but all were limited in terms of player identification. The one club that departed from convention in all respects was the N.Y. Football Giants, and this cape is the quintessential exemplar. Handsomely crafted in a royal blue satin exterior and a quilted interior red satin lining, the cape was loaded with extras, including oversized interior pockets, five button snaps, a zippered hood, and full-length body. The verso is complete with an arched tackle twill 5-1/2” “G-I-A-N-T-S” print logo sewn in white satin twill. Beneath sits a 5-1/2” numeric identifier, "35." Bob Gaiters, a halfback from New Mexico State, wore #35 for the Giants in 1961 and ’62. Then, no one wore #35 in the immediate thereafter. But the cape was probably used in following seasons by several different players. The collar sports an early ‘60s Thorp Sporting Goods (New York City) label. In short, one of the finest capes of its time, to include a Giants-exclusive numeric identifier, and wearable today at your local NFL amphitheater.
