1955 Stan Musial Game-Worn, Autographed Cardinals Jersey Inscribed "1955 Game Jersey"
Stan Musial still numbers among the living legends of baseball. When he starred on the diamond, there was no use of steroids or performance enhancing drugs. For fully a generation, Musial delivered countless memories with his sweet swing, astonishing skills and amiable bearing; even in his eighties, he's the life of the party, breaking out the harmonica to entertain fans, young and old.
This size "44" jersey was worn by Musial during the 1955 season. Our consignor obtained it from the long-time Cardinals' equipment manager, Butch Yatkeman (who began working for the team in 1924). Yatkeman told our consignor, at the time of purchase, that Musial did indeed wear this in 1955. Our consignor then took the jersey to Musial who inspected it. He confirmed that it was one of his gamers and that Yatkeman had saved some of his jerseys. Musial signed the front and added "1955 Game Jersey." A Stan the Man certificate is included. The original zipper remains and it's fully functional.
Following the '55 season, the number was removed in anticipation of the jersey's assignment for minor league use. But for reasons unknown, it was never sent down. Truly a blessing for the benefit of the uniform-collecting world, because this garment is in impeccable condition. There are no moth holes or blemishes of note. Had the jersey been dispatched to the minors, it may well have been used to oblivion. Yatkeman reapplied the "6" (heavy felt) at the time it was originally purchased. It is not the original number.
Wonderfully crafted on the front is the Cardinals-on-bat logo, in chenille thread. Red braiding encircles the neckline and sleeves, and flows down the front button path. Standard vents appear under the arms for a little respite from those hot summer afternoon games. Affixed in the tail is a Rawlings "Hall of Fame Flannel" tag and size label, sewn in tandem. Secured in the inner tail is a "Set 1 1955" flag tag and washing instructions label. A "Stan the Man" hologram is stickered below the Rawlings label, and "Stan Musial" is chain-stitched in the tail.
