Mid-1980s Mark Messier Game-Used Edmonton Oilers Jersey (w/Great Use; Team Repairs)

Edmonton Oilers teammates Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier were joined at the hip from the moment they broke into the NHL. While Gretzky would break all the records in the years to come, the undeniable fact is, Messier would win two more Stanley Cups than The Great One did in their brilliant careers. To be sure, Messier had no peer as a physical force and money player, and the numbers support the claim. He's one of the few players who averaged more points in the postseason (1.25 per game) than in the regular season (1.07), further testimony to his big-game ability. Messier wore this blue road jersey in either the 1985-86 or 1986-87 seasons, the ones in which blue Nike manufacturer tags were visible in the collars. The mesh sweater has Messier written all over it, as it displays numerous signs of heavy contact in the form of pilling, board abrasions and sticks marks. Of particular note are the five team repairs that are evident on the sleeves as well as the front and reverse. On the chest appears the Oilers logo, sewn on in tackle twill, blue-on-white, while the familiar oil drop appears in orange. The "A" that signifies Messier's role as alternate captain is stitched to the left breast in orange-and-white twill, and his sweater number "11" is sewn to the back and each sleeve in the same colors. Orange panels line the shoulders and lower sleeves, while orange, blue and white panels accentuate the waist. The orange V-neck collar is made of elastic cotton. The manufacturer tag notes the "XL" size inside the collar. A skate lace is tied to the fight strap on the inside of the lower back. Messier and the Oilers were at their height of their dominance in the mid-1980s, and in the 1986-87 season, they would drink from the Stanley Cup for the third time in four years.
