1968-69 Tom Seaver Game-Used, Signed Spalding Glove
The New York Mets were indeed "amazin'" in 1969. Going into the season, few gave the team much of a chance of finishing .500, much less contending for a World Series title. There wasn't much reason to be optimistic given the team's 394-737 combined record through their first six seasons. 1969 would be a banner year for the "other team" in the Big Apple. The Gil Hodges crew shocked the world when it qualified for the post season. After advancing into the World Series, the Mets dispatched the heavily favored Orioles in five games.
Tom Seaver was the team's top draw. The Cooperstown-destined hurler was his normal unhittable self as he amassed a 25-7 record en route to his first Cy Young Award. Offered is the glove which served Seaver (likely in the regular season of 1969, and possibly even from '68 forward, to that Mets World Series). According to glove expert Denny Esken, it's a miracle that such a glove has survived all these years. Esken mentioned how Seaver was notorious for keeping his gloves until they were almost unusable. This 12" Spalding model 42-203 was obtained by our consignor directly from Seaver before the World Series in 1969. It has remained in precisely the same condition as the day Tom Terrific surrendered it. Although the glove wasn't used in World Series competition, it was used by Seaver during the period 1968-69. The functional integrity of this personal model glove has not been compromised. It remains fully intact with no degradation to its material or its assembly. As should be expected, however, the glove evidences exceptional game use. On the thumb's reverse, there appears a nearly inconspicuous penning - it's indecipherable, but appears to be "TS."
The blue Spalding manufacturer's label on the wriststrap remains affixed (highly unusual, according to Esken), and it showcases significant wear. Photos of Seaver during this time period affirm the style of the offered glove. Seaver signed ("8") the back in black felt tip.
According to Esken, no finer Tom Seaver glove, aside from the one displayed in the Hall of Fame, is known to exist.
