The stampings are a bit light and, uniformly, the ball is mildly toned. There's a sheen to the surface that suggests, but doesn't confirm, that the ball bears an application of shellac. Now, Ruth was never modest in placing his autograph - always conspicuous, beautifully flowing. And in those respects, this one is emphatic. The signature fully occupies the sweet spot, traversing nearly three inches of the surface. Even from a considerable distance, this Ruthian signing is immediately distinctive.
