When the Detroit Red Wings selected Steve Yzerman with the fourth overall pick in the 1983 NHL entry draft it proved to be a turning point in franchise history. YZERMAN is the longest-serving captain in NHL history (19 seasons), Yzerman ranks sixth on the NHL's career list for points (1,755) and eighth in goals (692). Only Howe racked up more goals (786) and points (1,809) in franchise history.Yzerman won three Stanley Cups as a player (1997, '98 and 2002) and one Olympic gold medal for Canada (2002). He retired following the 2005-06 season and was named team vice president a few months later.
