Original "Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" (w/Four Deleted Tracks)

trong>INTRODUCTION

The Matt Wanhala Collection

Several years ago, while in search of the record “Little G.T.O.” by Ronny and the Daytonas, Matt Wanhala of Salinas, California made his decision to invest in vinyl records. With determination, he compiled a record collection now consisting of some of the finest vinyl records ever pressed. His inspiration to become a collector came after reading Neal Umphred’s Goldmine Record Guide, and the challenge to claim the most valuable records in the hobby became, for him, a crusade. In the course of assembling this fine collection, Matt dealt with many collectors, including the most renowned authority of vinyl records, John Tefteller. The following listings, then, provide several rare opportunities to capture some of the most exclusive treasures in this exciting genre.

Offered is an original first pressing of Bob Dylan’s second album, “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.” The pressing is considered among the rarest albums ever released. This MONO copy, with the critical matrix number “trong>XLP-58717-1A” machine-stamped on the record's inner-groove, is one of only a dozen in existence. The rarity of this record is explained in the song selections. In May 1963, shortly before the album's release, Dylan walked off the set of The Ed Sullivan Show because the head of program practices considered the song “Talkin’ John Birch Society Blues” potentially libelous and wouldn’t allow Dylan to perform it. The song was one of four taken off the album and replaced. (The other deleted songs were “Rocks and Grave,” “Let Me Die In My Footsteps,” and “Gambling Willie.”) Within a two-week period, replacement songs were recorded, new albums were pressed, and the album's artwork was reprinted - all in enough time to fill Columbia’s immediate order. In this haste, a number of the original pressings (trong>XLP-58717-1A) were stamped with the new label and packaged in the new sleeve. All the elements of this piece - to include the record, the inner sleeve, and the cover - are trong>NM/MT. (The cover's original plastic shrink wrap remains, but is, of course, split.)

Additionally, there's included an original 1963 Columbia Canadian STEREO copy that features the track listing with the deleted titles on the cover. The record's label lists the replacement titles, and the record actually contains the replacement titles. This gem from the north details - record is apparent NM/MT, and the cover is EX/MT (minor shelf wear) with no edge splitting. (There's no inner wrap or album shrink wrap.)
