SOLD Mid-1950s - Jackie Robinson Game-Used Glove-

With a reflection on Jackie Robinson Day (www.iam42.com) in Major League Baseball on April 15th, we present one of his game worn gloves.  One of Jackie's glove has never offered before in auction, and we are proud to present this rare gem.  It was discovered in NYC tucked away in a garage, wrapped in plastic. All together, the find included Jackie Robinson's bat, Dodger Caps, and this glove.   Robinson to the major league level in 1947, was a bold—but long overdue—endeavor by the Brooklyn Dodgers, breaking the institution's unwritten color barrier. Robinson played his first season at first base and spent the majority of his career at second. Robinson met the challenge—and abuse—head on, and became a vital component of the National League's most powerful franchise. He was named the MLB Rookie of the Year in 1947.

Over a ten year career, he played in six World Series including the one in 1955. Also not forgotten in his 1962 HOF campaign, was that he played in six consecutive All-Star Games (1949-54) and won the NL MVP in 1949.Assessing himself, Robinson said, "I'm not concerned with your liking or disliking me ... all I ask is that you respect me as a human being.”  It is also important to note, that although many opposed him, some offered words of encouragement like his teammate Pee Wee Reese, Hank Greenberg and Leo Durocher. Regarding Robinson's qualities on the field, Leo Durocher said, "Ya want a guy that comes to play. This guy didn't just come to play. He come to beat ya. He come to stuff the goddamn bat right up your ass."  Offered is a Rawlings BD (Bob Dilinger) model glove employed by the Hall of Famer during his history-making career in Flatbush. This glove was used by Jackie Robinson in the last three years of his career.  Pictured we have a photo of Robinson holding this exact glove as well others that are available.  This rare gem is the only Jackie Robinson glove known to exist.  Unlike jersey’s and bats issued for World Series play, this glove is personal and played with throughout the Season and Post Season.  Therefore this glove was used in the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers Championship season and World Series as well as the1956 Season and World Series.  Robinson was the first winner of the Rookie of the Year Award, and his veteran-like playing immediately brought him to October drama and excitement. Jackie Robinson retired using this glove in 1956.  The glove shows extensive wear and aging on the leather throughout which attributes to the three years of use.  The photo match and the ability to the see the Rawlings labels aided me in getting the exact date of the glove.  Some restoration has been done to the glove to preserve the historical significance of this iconic relic.  This included cleaning, and re-attaching the web.  The solid V Anchor web that was attached to the pocket had separated. The glove remains original except for a period correct Rawlings label that was utilized only for the astetic viewing of this piece of history.  One of the highlights on this BD model glove is Jackie’s iconic jersey number “42” written in black felt tip on the intact wrist strap also, signifying that this glove belonged to him as proven by the “42” pictured in the photo match.  His jersey number “42” has been retired in all Major League clubhouses as a representation of Jackie’s pioneer-ism, courage and grace in baseball.   It should be noted, Jackie Robinson tangibles that survive are today viewed through the prism of baseball's historical importance, relevance and of course monetary value. This is not something that can wantonly pass from one collector’s hand to the next. This is for the elite collector with an appreciation for the historical impressions of baseball.
