Mid-1950s Los Angeles Rams - Tom Fears Game-Worn / Used Riddell RK4 Suspension Helmet (Marinovich Family LOA) Extra-Ordinary !!
Tom Fears was the first guy to line up away from the tackle on the line making him the first wide receiver in NFL history. It was interesting that he was drafted by the Rams as a defensive back but was so versatile that they played him on offensive where he showed his best work. During his first three seasons he led the NFL receivers in catches. He made the Pro Bowl in 1950 (and was an All-Pro). He later spent many years as a coach and was the first Mexican-American football player to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Presented is a true rarity in the field of collectible helmets. First off, it is a true Los Angeles Rams gamer from the mid-1950s which by itself is a survival skill. It should be noted that the Rams were the first to add distinctive design to their helmets via the curved horns (via Fred Gehrke halfback/artist in 1948). The rest of the whistle becomes wet when realizing that... Yes, it is indeed one on Fear's game worn helmets and it shows tremendous wear. It is an original Riddell with the RK4 6 Point suspension - has anti-concussion padding in the interior. Leather jaw pads are snapped on both sides. Another of the exciting features is the ventilation holes along the top. Riddell engraving on the reverse.Identifying maker is in the interior "FEARS".
A chinstrap is intact along the bottom with it being more than likely that the two-bar facemask was replaced/added at some point for aesthetical contribution.Helmet shows discoloration (yellowing) from method of storage/age and overall has a bad odor.
We all like a good story and history behind the items we collect and this helmet's story can definitely deliver. Provenance comes from Chief Fertig, Chief of Police Huntington Park, Todd Marinovich's grandfather, he was the security at the LA Colleseum. He was close friends with the Equipment managers and they would gift him helmets often. This helmet was featured in a museum and comes directly from the Todd Marinovich collection with the family paperwork.
